Bromeliad Care

The best way to find a good location for your bromeliad is to acclimate in cooler periods and adapt it to this area as the season changes.  Be observant wherever you set the plant outdoors and watch for any changes.  If color starts to fade you may want to move it into more light.  Bromeliads grown indoors prefer a bright room but will tolerate diffused light.  For optimum growth provide adequate light.  It is very important especially for Vrieseas that they are potted in a well drained (not mushy media).  They do not like “wet feet”.  Bromeliads like a media high in acidity, such as peat moss and coconut coir.  Examples are black volcanic cinder, coarse peat moss from Denmark, perlite, and coconut from Sri Lanka.  Most bromeliads will tolerate long periods of drought but will do best if watered once or twice a week.  In areas where only hard water is available, distilled water or rainwater is recommended.  During summer months or in a very dry climate misting plants in the early am and latter part of the day is recommended.  Setting up a fine mist system also works well to help increase humidity.  Less watering is required during winter.  Fertilize 3 times a year using a slow release fertilizer or miracle grow at half recommended strength.  The best time to fertilize is during the growing period from spring to the end of summer.
